Secondary placements

All R5 learners are required to obtain and maintain a secondary placement while enrolled. Learners without a secondary placement will be marked absent for afternoons until they submit a valid training agreement or other verification of secondary placement.

Ten hours per week is the recommended minimum time commitment to a secondary placement.

Employment

A job is an excellent secondary placement. Submit pay stubs to verify your hours regularly and accrue credit. Learners seeking employment can get assistance through the Workforce Center.

Career Center

The Career Center offers technical education and professional certifications in a variety of areas. R5 learners are encouraged to opt for Mod 3 classes. Applications are on the Career Center website. Popular programs fill up quickly, and a semester commitment is mandatory.

CMU Tech and Concurrent Enrollment

CMU Tech and CMU concurrent enrollment are opportunities for students to earn college credit and/or technical certifications while still in high school. Students must register for these classes well in advance, and there is a minimum GPA requirement to participate. Visit with the counselor for more information

Home School Participation

R5 learners can continue to participate in classes or activities at their home high schools as a secondary placement with the approval of their home high school. This can include everything from athletics to theater to advanced placement and elective courses.

Volunteering

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities in our community that can provide valuable career experience while making a meaningful impact. Learners track their hours on a tracking sheet to earn credit. Some local volunteer opportunities are listed in SchoolLinks*.

Valley Prep School

The Valley Program offers instruction and credit opportunities in core academic areas to students at all area high schools who are seeking small classrooms and more direct instruction. R5 learners can request a referral from the R5 counselor to attend Valley as a secondary placement. This is a semester commitment.

Young Parents Program

Learners in R5's Young Parent Program are already set with their secondary placement. They will participate in classes on campus beyond 12:30. They can turn in training agreements if they also work to earn additional elective credit.

Internships & Apprenticeships

R5 honors students taking advantage of any opportunity to gain career experience. For example, every semester Colorado Sheet Metal Workers offers a pre-apprenticeship program that counts as a secondary placement for R5 learners. Other opportunities are listed on SchoolLinks*.
